Seeing Again: Unlocking the Epigenome to Rejuvenate Retinal Neurons
Course Description
In this introductory course, we will explore the fascinating world of the epigenome and its critical role in neuronal health and disease. You will learn how complex biological processes, such as organ development and cellular responses to the environment, are dependent on genetic programs regulated by epigenetic factors.
Throughout the course, we will introduce big questions using the retina as a model: How do epigenetic modifications regulate development? How do changes in the epigenome contribute to aging? How can cutting-edge technologies help us analyze and manipulate the epigenome? Can we hack the epigenome to rejuvenate and regenerate neuronal tissues? Classes will include hands-on activities, such as visualization of gene expression and epigenomic profiles and discussions of seminal papers in the field of epigenetics and aging. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to design and defend their own study focused on epigenetics, aging, or regeneration, applying the concepts learned throughout the course.
Meet the Instructor: Ximena Corso-Díaz
"I joined Stanford in 2024 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology. I was born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia, where my fascination with science began during early childhood. This interest was sparked by the incredible biodiversity of Colombia and was consolidated during my high school research project on the similarities between primate and human social behavior. I am captivated by the ways in which neurons interpret the genome to form the complex circuits of our nervous system. My research focuses on understanding how genes are regulated in retinal neurons and how we can leverage this understanding to prevent neurodegeneration and blindness. As a proud Colombian, I enjoy dancing and spending quality time with my family. I am passionate about inspiring the next generation to embrace science and I am looking forward to mentoring new students at Stanford!"
